What This Calculator Does

The EMI Calculator computes your Equated Monthly Installment — the fixed payment due each month on any installment loan, whether it's a personal loan, auto loan, home loan, or other fixed-term financing. EMI combines both principal and interest into one consistent payment for the life of the loan, so it's easier to budget around than a payment that changes month to month.

The EMI amount depends on three inputs: the principal you're borrowing, the annual interest rate, and the tenor (loan length) in months. As a general rule, extending the tenor lowers your EMI but increases the total interest paid over the life of the loan, while a shorter tenor raises the EMI but reduces total interest. Most lenders calculate EMI using the reducing-balance method, where interest is charged only on the outstanding principal each month rather than the original loan amount — which is why a larger share of early payments goes toward interest, and a larger share of later payments goes toward principal.

EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ / [(1+r)ⁿ − 1]

P is reduced gradually with each payment; in the early months a larger share of your EMI covers interest, and a larger share goes toward principal as the balance shrinks. This is the same reducing-balance amortization logic used for mortgages, auto loans, and personal loans, so the concept carries over directly if you're comparing EMI against a loan quoted in monthly-payment terms.
