Core formula

Ownership cost = purchase price − eligible incentive + energy or fuel cost + maintenance − resale value. EV energy = miles ÷ miles per kWh × electricity price; gas fuel = miles ÷ MPG × gasoline price.

Calculation steps

  1. Energy use is calculated from annual miles and vehicle efficiency, then multiplied by local electricity or gasoline price and years owned.
  2. Purchase incentives reduce EV acquisition cost only when the user expects to qualify. Resale value offsets total ownership cost at the end of the horizon.
  3. Maintenance is entered directly because vehicle, warranty, climate, and local labor rates produce more variation than a single national assumption can capture.

Yes when possible. Wall-to-battery losses mean purchased electricity can exceed energy stored in the battery. You can account for losses by using a slightly lower effective miles-per-kWh figure or a higher blended electricity price.

03How is gasoline cost calculated?+

Annual gallons equal annual miles divided by combined MPG. Gallons are multiplied by the expected average gasoline price and ownership years.
